UN Urges Thai Government to Take Urgent Protective Measures After Death Threats Against Two Anti-EEC Activists

Mary Lawlor, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, posted a message on her official Facebook page expressing serious concern over the situation in Thailand—particularly the threats faced by “human rights defenders in the Eastern region” who have spoken out against harmful activities by companies operating under Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) policy.

The case involves death threats made against two prominent community leaders and activists, Jorn Naowa-opas and Sumet Rianpongnam, who have been opposing projects linked to industrial development in the EEC area.
