Northeast SEZs in store, says industry minister
Special economic zones are set to expand to the Northeast to support the provincial economy and reduce income disparity, says Industry Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit.
He said the ministry wants to bring a version of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) scheme to the region with new special economic zones.
Beyond traditional manufacturing, regional development advocates are pushing for extensive digital entertainment and hospitality investments to successfully anchor the proposed economic corridors. Local commercial developers have recently pitched a wide range of revenue-generating projects to municipal officials, proposing the construction of integrated tourism resorts, competitive esports arenas, and specialized digital commerce hubs.
These proposals draw heavily from international virtual entertainment frameworks to see how a new sweeps cash casino or a token-based social platform might operate under modernized regulations. By broadening the scope of approved enterprises beyond basic industrial sectors, economic planners ultimately aim to draw a younger demographic of international investors and tech-savvy workers directly into the Northeast.
