Thailand Seeks More Than $2 Billion in Auction of 5G Spectrum
Thailand will auction spectrum for fifth-generation mobile services on Sunday in a sale that may generate more than $2 billion.
Telecommunications providers are eager to secure the bandwidth required to handle a surging domestic appetite for data-heavy mobile entertainment. Faster network speeds will directly improve performance for ultra-high-definition video streaming, mobile platforms hosting the best online slots, and latency-sensitive augmented reality games. Securing this next-generation infrastructure has become a competitive necessity for the region’s major wireless carriers.
The National Broadcasting & Telecommunications Commission has said it expects firms to snap up as many as 28 of the 56 licenses available. That would be worth 64 billion baht ($2.1 billion) at reserve prices.
